// Light is like an idea, by itself, it eludes visual perception and only in interaction with time, space, and matter, the kaleidoscopes of colors and shapes arises that can turn into images. Temporality, spatiality, and movement are just as implicit as the changes that depend on the lens system that receives the light – whether it is in an eye, in a camera or in a projection system. Contemporary light art works are characterized by the reflected use of physical light as material, medium or metaphor. >>

During INTERFERENCE, international artists meet in Tunis and show their light art works on various sites in the Medina. Victoria Coeln, Vicki DaSilva, Houda Gorbel and Wadi Mhiri, Tom Groll and Kuno Seltmann, Andrea Thembie Hannig, Hartung and Trenz, Margareta Hesse, Annika Hippler, joeressen+kessner, Francesco Mariotti, Marcus Neustetter, Diana Ramaekers, RaumZeitPiraten, Ursula Scherrer, Kurt Laurenz Theinert, Ingo Wendt, Xenorama, among others, are contributing site-related light art interventions. The curators are Aymen Gharbi and Bettina Pelz. >>

// Since the first major “urban light play” when in 1900, for the World Exhibition in Paris, the Eiffel Tower and the “Palais d’Electricité” were illuminated – a plurality of light festivals developed all over the world. Some focus on architectural lighting, some on entertainment and some on art. They all take place in the night and they all make use of public space to stage their choice of light-based works. >>

During INTERFERENCE, international curators and producers of art and light events will meet in Tunis and will discuss the impact of their festivals on democratic culture, public sphere, and urban development. They present and explain best and bad practice and will reflect on the potential to develop a light art biennial for Tunis. >>

// Understanding light is fundamental in architecture. The way,  the properties of light unfold, affects the function and the use of a building. It shapes or misshapes the attraction a user feels for the surroundings, its objects, and activities. Professional lighting design refers to the reflected use of natural and artificial light as an inseparable part of the architectural conception encompassing technical innovation, environmental care, and social impact. Lighting quality is engendered in harmonizing the human needs, ecological considerations, and architectural options.

During INTERFERENCE, Prof. Bettina Pelz, Liubov Moskvina and Lena Weisner from the University of Applied Science Hildesheim and Nada Essid and Anouar Hajjar from the National School of Architecture and Urbanism Tunis, head a workshop to develop temporary lighting designs for selected sites in the Medina. During the festival, the participants will be on the chosen sites and will explain to the visitors what the results of the lab. >>
